About Us

MISSION STATEMENT

One for the Kids was established in 1993 by a group of concerned individuals who wanted to make a difference. Our first event was held at Old Oaks Golf course and raised a few thousand dollars. Since that time we have raised over $400,000 for several different charities. All our charities benefit children of the Chicagoland area and our main contribution each year is made to Special Children’s Charities of Chicago.

OUR DONATIONS HELP OTHERS

Special Children’s Charities of Chicago is the fundraising organization of Chicago Special Olympics. Special Olympics provide a competitive forum for thousands of special athletes here in Chicago every year. Both were founded in 1969 for athletes competing in everything from gymnastics to tennis, basketball to track and field.

Benton Community Settlement carries a proud tradition that can be found in the smiles of our children, the competitive nature of our young adults, and the satisfaction and appreciation that abounds in the sentiment of our seniors. We are a not-for-profit settlement home that has operated for over 90 years with many children’s programs but few funds. The programs offered include, but are not limited to: Summer Day Camp, Kiddie Time (pre-school program), Begin again Moms, Father & Son Floor Hockey, Saturday Play Camp, and Storytime.

HELPING HAND

The Heart Institute for Children was founded in 1987 by a group of Pediatric Cardiologists from the University of Chicago, NorthWestern University (Children’s Memorial Hospital) and Loyola University. These physicians, all of whom had professional appointments at their respective institutions, felt that they could provide optimal care for their pediatric patients in a differently structured environment. They created THIC at Christ Hospital Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL, in anticipation that a dedicated pediatric hospital would be built in the near future. This hospital was completed in 1998. The name, Hope Children Hospital, was selected by a group of parents whose children had received care at this hospital.

THIC evolved and grew. Recognized training programs in Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery were added. After the merger of Evangelical Hospital System and Lutheran General Hospital to form Advocate Health Care, THIC began a close cooperation with the Pediatric Cardiology Section of Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. At this point of time, THIC has 16 Pediatric Cardiologists and 4 Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons, covering all subsections of this field.

Research sections were added. First the Maurice Lev Congenital Heart and Conduction System Center, then the Cardiac Molecular Biology Section. These sections have pure research and teaching functions and they are maintained by a nationally recognized research staff.

ONE LOCAL FAMILY

In addition to our traditional benefactors, local families, that have a specific child based need, are nominated to our organization each year. Our cocktail event’s main purpose is to help support one of those families. This allows us to focus our efforts to a specific family, child, and need. In selecting a “host family” each year for this event, we build a local awareness, link our efforts with a tangible cause, and can energize our giving by having a face behind our efforts. Nominations can be accepted through any board member.

This year One for the Kids is supporting the Cuiching Family. The Cuiching family is battling adversity on multiple fronts with seven year old Ellie fighting a brain tumor, six year old Jake grappling with a neurological disorder and Mother Kyle struggling with Multiple Sclerosis all while living in a partially uninhabitable Lemont home damaged by flood.
