The Salverredy Family of Darien will be our “Host Family” for 2013

Julio and Rachel Salverredy are the parents of two boys: Jaden (9 years) and Ryan (6 years). This summer, they were excited to learn that they were expecting another child, this time a girl. Shortly after learning of her pregnancy, Rachel began to experience respiratory distress, including coughing and shortness of breath. By early December, her symptoms intensified and her lung collapsed. She was transferred to the Intensive Care unit at the university of Chicago. Rachel was in critical condition, required a ventilator and was fully-sedated for weeks to allow her lungs to heal and her baby to develop further. Amazingly, and against all odds, Rachel has begun to show signs of recovery and recently delivered her baby, Hope. Julio acknowledges that his wife and newborn daughter have a long road ahead, but he prays “this miracle continues”.

It all started as an excuse for a group of a small group of guys to play “hooky” and raise a little money for Special Olympics back in 1993. Twenty years and almost a half million dollars later, One for the Kids has made a difference in tens of thousands of children’s lives!

Come help us celebrate and have a “great time for a great cause” at the One for the Kids Cocktail Party! The event will benefit Chicago Special Olympics, Benton House, The Heart Institute for Children and one special family in need.

First, a little about me: I’ve been married to my high-school sweetheart, Megan, for ten years and we’re fortunate to have two daughters, Mary and Claire who keep us both very busy.

I joined OFTK four years ago when Eric Degnan (already a board member) approached me, and several other close friends, about becoming involved with OFTK. At that time, my first child had just been born and I was incredibly grateful that she was a healthy little girl. I felt compelled to become involved with OFTK when I learned that they support local children’s charities and families coping with health issues of children.

The year I became involved with OFTK we hosted the first annual cocktail event. It was exciting to plan and deliver a wonderful evening that raised a significant amount of money for a deserving family. As a Board Member, and Chair for this year’s cocktail event, I’m excited to incorporate new ideas and expand on the success of this special evening. Anyone who has been to this event can tell you that it is a top notch, amazing event.

I think the reason that I have stayed committed to OFTK is summed up by our mission statement, “A good time for a great cause”. There is a lot of work to be put in, but the fun that you have working with this group and the support we bring to the charities is well worth the effort. Through this charity, I’ve developed relationships with some wonderful people that I wouldn’t have known otherwise and strengthened ones I already had.

It’s exciting to be a part of an organization like OFTK because it actively seeks new ideas and innovative ways to raise money for deserving charities. The status quo just won’t do for this group. Lastly, I’m proud to know that the monies raised by our organization stay in the Chicagoland area and benefit local families. Being from Chicagoland, this is very important to me.

THANK YOU to everyone who made the 20th Anniversary Golf Outing a GREAT EVENT!

This year’s host family was the Cuiching Family from Lemont, whose story touch many firsthand at the 2012 Cocktail Party this past April or when seen in their video on our website. The Cuiching’s are a warm and loving family that has been dealt quite a few blows over the last year; the largest being daughter Ellie’s brain tumor. With several surgeries under her belt at the age of 7, Ellie still has a long road ahead of her.

For our 20th Anniversary we wanted to give big and Ellie was our inspiration. A day of fun was planned for the family before the event even began. The day began with a limo ride to the hotel. Then a few hours to play at the Hyatt Lodge pool with toys donated from One For The Kids. “The facility was awesome” Kyle (Ellie’s Mother) said when asked about their stay. “Ellie and Jack got to swim before the event and then again the following morning.” It was their favorite part of the day.

When the party began that evening, the family was greeted by an amazing turn out of over 400 people. Many friends and family, but an overwhelming amount of strangers there to help a family they had never met. “Every time I think of the event it puts a smile on my face” Kyle told us. She recalls fondly the night out with her extended family as the highlight of this year. “ The band was amazing , and we had a great time dancing with family and friends all night.” The surprise was late night cheeseburgers brought out on silver platters, which were also a Cuiching family favorite.

After a great night of dancing, it’s back to the real world for the Cuichings and summer vacation for their children. Ellie and Jack are standing up in a relatives wedding this summer in California, thanks to donated frequent flyer miles from Kyle’s amazingly supportive sister. They are also able to visit husband David’s family on their trip. With money raised from the Cocktail Party this year large repairs can be made this summer on the Cuichings home. The home has flooded several times, causing structural damage. Kyle wanted to give a special thanks to Dan Irwin, a One For The Kids board member, for reaching out to local officials in Lemont regarding their home. The city of Lemont came out to the property and was able to repair the street, so the Cuichings home would no longer flood.

Just in time for summer the family has recently received some more good news. Ellie had an MRI the week of the cocktail party and we promised a follow up on her progress. We are happy to say the tumor has shown no sign of growth for the first time since she was diagnosed. This is amazing news, which could mean her chemo treatments have been working. The family is overjoyed and that stands, as a much needed boost of confidence for Kyle and David. “ Ellie inspires me on a daily basis. I think of Ellie and how much she has endured but yet still goes to school and does not complain.” The journey for Ellie is not yet over and One For The Kids will keep you updated on her progress. One For The Kids is excited to announce that Tim O’Malley, president of the One For The Kids charity, has been honored with the 2012 Anne McGlone Burke Award. This award is given to a person or organization that has contributed above and beyond to Special Olympics Chicago and Special Children’s Charities. Tim has given much of his personal time as a Special Olympics Chicago Board member and has directed financial contributions through donations from One For The Kids. He was presented with the award at Soldier Field during the 44th Annual Special Olympics Chicago Spring Games Opening Ceremony this year.
